Concrete Jungle: A guide to the modern society

It has been observed that the two legged mammal excels at survival. Survival as defined by the mammal’s ancestors. Based on this observation, the mammal has established itself as master of the universe. The mammal elders never travelled to the Outside nor did they ever encounter beings from the Outside. So naturally, they were the masters of the universe.

As master of the universe, the mammal leads a tough life. For a good part of the day, the mammal locks itself up in a four walled structure with other two legged mammals. It works hard all day long by staring into a square box. The mammal that can stare the hardest and longest gets established as the leader of the four-walled structure. Now due to this prolonged staring, sometimes the mammals fail to distinguish between locations and objects. As a result, they continue to stare outside the four-walled structures and even at non-square box objects. The leader mammal enjoys occasional luxuries such as sniffing intoxicating fluids and staring at non-square box objects. Yes, the leader is allowed to stare.

As the day winds up and shadows start lengthening, the mammal begins to yearn for home and its partner. The leader mammal leaves early to be with its partner. Whereas certain subordinate mammals are required to stay locked up longer. This unfair division of labour causes frustration in certain mammals. When such mammals reach their cave, they tend to take the frustration out on their mates which, they claim, is their right.

The mammal’s mate , also referred to as the breeder, is a four legged mammal. However the mate was not always four legged. It used to be a two legged mammal and used to live a similar life like the two legged mammal. Both breeds of mammals would lock themselves in identical four-walled structures and stare at square boxes. However the elder mammals decided that since the two legged mammal started at bigger square boxes, its mate would have to return earlier, hunt for the family, prepare meals and wait dutifully for the mammal to return.

Gradually this disparity in functions began to make the breeder mammal weak in the knees. The hunting and cave chores started to take their toll. As a result, it could no longer support itself on two legs and became a four legged mammal. The ancestors then decreed that the breeder mammals must give up their staring jobs. However the damage was already done. The breeder mammal could no longer walk on two legs. This created fresh problems for the breeder mammal. The unproductive two legged mammals, that roamed the jungle aimlessly,  would often confuse the breeder mammal for other four legged mammals and often pounce on it for hunting purposes. Thus a new decree was issued. Now the breeder mammal would not hunt any longer. This became its mate’s job.

With prolonged staring and the added task of hunting, the two legged mammal returns to the cave extremely frustrated. And because it assumes it has eternal right over its mate, the two legged mammal vents its frustration by pouncing on its breeder mate. This act produces the next line of mammals in the jungle. The breeder mammal’s role thus fulfilled, the two legged mammal convinces itself that whatever happens is for the best. With the blessings of the elder mammals, this cycle continues. The two legged mammal is convinced it is now the supreme master of the universe.

  1. The beginning reminds me of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy for some reason. Almost like a description of an alien race using very abstract terms.

    Describes our lives very well
